QUESTIONS TO ASK ANY BREEDER

1) WHAT KIND OF LIFESTYLE DOES THIS BREED REQUIRE?
( my answer) Chows can adapt to most any lifestyle. City, country, busy or laid back. You want to make sure you socialize them well whether in a city or in the country.
2) WHAT PERSONALITY TRAITS SHOULD I BE INFORMED ABOUT?
(my answer)If not socialized they can become overly aggressive and very territorial. They are an aloof breed and while they do not need constant catering you want to make sure they handled, like it or not. ;-)
3)WHAT GROOMING REQUIREMENTS ARE THERE WTH THIS BREED?
(my answer) Chows come in 2 reckognized coats, but 3 unofficially. There is the smooth coat, which is short and very easily maintained. there is the Rough coat which is anywhere from 1.5 inches to 5 inches. The
unreckognized coat is the English Coat it is 1.5 inches and is not smoothe and it is not as long as most rough coats. It is very beautiful and very easy for the average homeowner to keep up with. You will need an
undercoat rake and brush, and need to use them daily. Nails need to be trimmed  so thier feet don't splay, as chows walk on the tips of thier toes.
4) WHAT TYPE OF EXERCISE DOES THIS BREED NEED?
(my answer) Chows are not typically prone to obesity, but they should be allowed to play in a fenced yard for at least 30 minutes or more 2-3 times a day, or leash walked 2x day. They may need to be let out for
potty breaks more frequently.
5) ARE THERE ANY COMMON HEALTH PROBLEMS ASSOCIATED WITH THIS BREED?
(my answer) Entropian, (rolling inward of eyelids) Hip dysplasia (hip bones too shallow or worn causing extreme pain in walking) and even thyroid problems.
6) CAN I MEET THE PARENTS AND CAN I VISIT YOUR KENNEL?
(my answer) I prefer for ALL my puppy parents to come and meet us. Plus, we have a live puppy cam so you can watch the mother interact with myself the babies and other visitors should you not be able to make
it here. I really don't like to ship but I will if you are over 8 hours away from me. Coming here is important for you as  It gives me a chance to give you hands on/ visual training.
7)IF ONE OF THE PARENTS IS NOT AVAILABLE DOES THE BREEDER HAVE PICTURES OF THE PARENT?
my answer N/A as all my males are here, unless God forbid one would happen to pass away prior to the birth of the babies.
8)MAY I SEE OR VISIT WHERE THE PUPPIES ARE RAISED?
( my answer) See above. :-)  absolutely as I said above, most all my puppy pare nts can watch their puppies be born, see the interaction with them, and I have asked many to come visit prior to pick up. They are
only little once ya know :-)
9)HOW MANY LITTERS DO YOU HAVE PER YEAR?
We currenly have had 3-4 litters a year, we plan to have 4-6 litters.
10) WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR RETIRED BREEDING DOGS?
(my answer) First of all they are not my breeding dogs, they are my family, and their worth to me is not measured in sperm or puppies, it is measured in purple kisses. They are  in a home where they will be
pampered forever. I personally can't wait to have a chow that reaches 13 years old or older.
11)HOW MANY DIFFERENT BREEDS DO YOU BREED AND HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU HAVE?
(my answer)I have 14  chows and 2 yorkies but have never bred the yorkies. I have a cat too, I haven't bred him to the yorkies or chows either  (joke)
12) WHAT IS THE AVERAGE LIFESPAN OF THE BREED?
my answer)10-15 years some even longer. Don't get a dog if you cannot commit that long or longer.
13) WHAT TYPE OF FOOD DO YOU FEED YOUR DOGS AND IS THERE ANYTHING THAT SHOULD NOT BE FED?
(my answer)I am a proud Purina One Lamb and rice or chicken and barley. I am a member of the Purina Pro Club, We also use Healthy morsels Lamb and Rice and for Puppies we feed large breed formula..
14)AT WHAT AGE CAN THE PUPPY GO TO ITS NEW HOME?
(my answer)Virginia Law is 7 weeks but all puppies will leave here at 8 weeks unless prior chow experience in the state of Va. All other states 8 weeks.
15)WHAT IMMUNIZATION PROTOCOL DO YOU FOLLOW FOR YOUR BREEDING DOGS AND YOUR PUPPIES?
(my answer) 1st vaccinations including bordetella intranasal  at 3 weeks and 1st subq multi vaccine  and vet visit at 6 weeks old, 4 dewormings starting at 2 weeks. I provide all dates for parents.
16) DO THE PUPPIES HAVE TYPE OF SOCIALIZATION PRIOR TO BEING SENT TO THIER NEW HOMES?
my answer) Oh yes, you can and will see for yourself. I have 5 children of different ages from toddler to teen. I have a cat and yorkies. They come well acclimated to sound of cars kids, jets, washing machines,
vacuum cleaners and a Mom yelling at the kids to clean their room. :-) They get handled and kissed and laid on thier backs. I could go on and on.
17) DO THE PUPPIES HAVE ANY TYPE OF TRAINING PRIOR TO GOING TO ITS NEW HOME?
(my answer)Yes, we teach no bite and how to be gentle, also we do a lot of handling of the babies. They come pad trained. And we groom them and do thier nails.  As for obedience training don't be silly they are a
bit too young for that. You may start puppy kindergarten when they reach 12 weeks old and they do well learning sit and down very young. That is for YOU to do.

RED FLAGS THAT TELL YOU A BIT ABOUT THE CHARACTER OF THE BREEDER
If you are asking these or any appropriate questions and the "breeder" is getting annoyed, you can bet your future vet bills that this isn't a place that would likely have the best interest of the dogs or puppies.
If they are more intersted in getting the puppy sold than who you are and what you can offer the puppy.
If they have not done any health certifications and don't really want to hear about them.
If they are offereing the puppies for an exorbant amount of money and there is nothing but the flash of a registry as to why. example, "AKC puppies, buy now going quick." One registry or another is NOT a sign of whether
you are getting quality, unfortunately. That is why you need to ask these questions.

ALL PUPPIES ARE LOVEABLE AND DESERVE A HOME, BUT IF YOU ARE GOING TO COMPENSATE SOMEONE  FOR RAISING ONE, YOU BEST MAKE SURE THAT a) THEY EARNED IT IN
WHAT THEY DO FOR THIER PUPPIES, AND b) YOU ARE BUYING FROM A PERSON WHO IS DOING ALL THEY CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU END UP WITH A HEALTHY PUPPY THAT
WON'T SUFFER LATER IN LIFE.  YOU ALSO NEED TO KNOW, THAT SOMETIMES NO MATTER HOW HARD A BREEDER TRIES TO PREVENT HEALTH ISSUES, THEY WILL STILL POP UP.
AT THAT POINT ITS EASY TO BLAME, BUT IF THEY REALLY DID EVERYTHING THEY COULD DO PRIOR TO BREEDING THEN YOU CAN'T BLAME THEM, IF THEY ARE TRULY GOOD
BREEDERS THEY WILL FEEL TERRIBLY FOR THE PUPPY/DOG AND FOR YOU. MOST OF THE TIME EVEN IF YOUR GUARNTEE HAS EXPIRED THEY WILL WORK WITH YOU ON EITHER
REPLACEMENT OR SOME SORT OF COMPENSATION. THAT IS NOT SAYING ALL WILL, BUT MORE THAN LIKELY THE GOOD ONES WILL.
I KNOW I WILL BE THERE FOR ANYONE AND ANY PUPPY THAT NEEDS ME.
